How To Use the iPhone’s Calling, Ringing and Clock Settings

“Speed Dialing”

With the old-fashioned speed dialing you assigned single numbers to your most often called telephone numbers. Then, to place a call to one of those contacts, you only had to press one number. The iPhone’s speed dialing is a little different. It’s through a Favorites list. To add your most often called contacts to your Favorites list:

  • Touch the .
  • Touch .
  • Touch the ‘+’ in the upper right corner.
  • Scroll through your contacts and select one. If your contact has more than one phone number, you will need to select one of the numbers (you can enter a contact twice into your Favorites with different numbers).

To re-order your contacts on your Favorites list:

  • Touch Edit in the upper left corner.
  • Holding your finger on the three little bars on the right side of the name, drag it to a new position.
  • When you’re finished, touch Done.

To delete a contact from your Favorites list (this will not remove the contact from your Contacts address book!):

  • Touch Edit in the upper left corner.
  • Touch a red circle beside the contact you want to remove.
  • Touch Delete.
  • When you’re finished, touch Done.

Add a Recent Call to Your Contacts

When you receive a call from someone whose phone number isn’t in your Contacts:

  • Touch the .
  • Touch .
  • Touch the blue arrow to the right of the number you want to add.
  • If it’s a new contact
    • Touch Create New Contact
    • Enter the name or company.
    • Touch Done.
  • If it’s an additional number for an existing contact:
    • Touch Add to Existing Contact
    • Scroll and select the contact.
    • Select the correct phone label.
    • Touch Done.

Silencing Your iPhone

The slider button on the top left side of your iPhone turns the ringer on and off. By default, the iPhone is set up to vibrate when the ringer is turned off.

To set the iPhone to silence instead of vibrate:

  • Touch Settings>>Sounds.
  • Touch Vibrate on Silent to OFF.

Change Your iPhone’s Default Ringtone

  • Touch Settings>>Sounds.
  • Touch Ringtone.
  • This is fun! Touch each Ringtone to listen to a sample.
  • Leave the check mark on the one you want to use.
  • Touch Sounds in the upper left corner.
  • Touch Settings in the upper left corner.
  • Touch the Home key to exit.

Assign a Ringtone to a Contact

  • Touch .
  • Select a contact.
  • Touch Edit in the top right.
  • Scroll down and touch ringtone.
  • Select a different ringtone from your Default ringtone.
  • Touch Save in the top right.
  • You can also assign a different ring vibration, text tone and text vibration to your contact in the same way.
  • When you’re finished, touch Done.

Use the iPhone as an Alarm Clock

  • Touch .
  • Touch .
  • Touch ‘+’ in the upper right.
  • Set the wake up time by scrolling through the numbers on the wheel.
  • Manage additional settings:
    • Repeat: Touch to schedule this alarm certain days of the week or leave as Never if you will set it as needed.
    • Sound: Touch to select your alarm sound from iPhone ringtones or songs in iTunes.
    • SnoozeON will give you the option to snooze 10 more minutes when the alarm rings; OFF will not give you a snooze option.
    • Label: Touch to assign a unique name to this particular alarm setting.
  • Touch Save in the top right.

See the Time in a Different Time Zone

  • Touch .
  • Touch .
  • Touch ‘+’ in top right.
  • Select a location, anywhere in the world.
  • Touch the Home Key to exit.
